Daily Meditation: We all have things in our life we’d like to pretend didn’t happen. Things we’ve said, seen or experienced. We exert massive amounts of energy trying to bury these memories. We try to cover them up, deny they exist or distract ourselves enough we can pretend to forget. Whether they were regretful or materially damaging, their nature is the same and attempting to avoid the impossible fact they happened will only make it impossible for us to move on. Denial is just another way to prolong suffering. If we are to no longer allow these events to influence our lives instead of trying to bury, suppress or erase we must face them directly. We must understand that by avoiding them we give them power over us. They are an undeniable part of our existence and good or bad they have helped to shape the perfect person we are today. Thus by acknowledging their presence and investigating the reason they haunt us we can illuminate the underlying issue and begin to the work of addressing it. Once we understand something it is much easier to ease our mind and simply let things be. By “trying to forget” or suppressing our past we only give our monkey mind cause and motivation to obsess over it. If we allow this obsession to fester we run the risk of allowing our past to define us and we are so much more than that. The first step forward comes in accepting the past. The second in forgiving all parties, including yourself, absolutely. The third is looking into what is preventing you from letting it go. The fourth is investigating that cause deeply. The last step is detaching from it completely. Today have the courage to allow the past to live permanently in the past. Cast your demons aside and feel the light, free, exhilarating sensation of freedom. ~Kobysattva
