The Isle of Skye, off the west coast of Scotland is well-known as a photographer’s paradise, and rightly so – it has been attracting artists, climbers and naturalists for centuries – seeking peace, tranquility and challenges far from the smokes of the city.

We live on the west coast of Scotland and look across to Skye from our house. Seeing plenty of fresh snow and checking the medium range forecast and within a few short hours we were packed and driving over for a 4 day stay in a little rented cottage.

This was the first sunrise last Sunday morning – out on my own exploring a little lochan. In the cold air, it was freezing as I watched, and occasional wind would blow the ice crust over the surface. I liked the textures close to the edge and focus stacked three images to get proper from to back sharpness.

I used a 3 stop soft lee filter to hold the sky as well.

The magenta in the foreground ice is reflected light from directly above me, as the golden glow of dawn was only apparent on the horizon – what a color palette.
