When I saw the stray leaf in the snow of the empty hiking trail I was reminded of the first verse of “In The Bleak Midwinter” poem by Christina Rossetti.
“In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter
Long ago.”
