When the Kouris dam was built in 1988 the entire village of Alassa was destined to disappear below the water. The government moved everyone into a nice new village that you will see up on the hill behind you. Even the church was submerged. But usually a part of it can be seen peeking eerily above the water. In fact in summer and years of severe drought the church is easily accessible, although each winter it deteriorates a little more. There are two ancient sites in the Alassa area and it is theorised that Alassa was in fact ancient Alashiya, a state in bronze age times.
