The salt flats in the Danakil depression, Afar region, Ethiopia, are located 100 meters below sea level, along the borderline with Eritrea. This huge salt crust, which can go up to 1,000 meters thick, goes deep in the earth’s crust. Salt miners break plates of salt out of the ground, cut them into tiles of standard sizes (4kg or 8kg), stacking and tying them on the camels’ backs. Salt is money. Salary.

A sulphuric stream running through a salt flat near the Salar de Uyuni, in the south-west of Bolivia. Along with various minerals and algae it creates wonderful colours across the barren landscape. 500px.com/photo/56346604
